The Seattle Mariners had a rough start to their road-trip, losing to the New York Mets by a score of 4-2. The Mariners were unable to generate any offense in the game, with only two runs scored in the ninth inning. The lack of offense was especially concerning considering the Mariners had been averaging 4.4 runs per game over their last five contests.
The Mariners had a few chances to score early in the game, but were unable to capitalize on them. In the first inning, they had runners on first and second with one out, but were unable to bring either of them home. They also had runners on second and third in the fourth inning, but again failed to score.
The Mariners’ struggles at the plate were compounded by some poor defense. In the fifth inning, a throwing error by third baseman Kyle Seager allowed a run to score, and in the sixth inning, a fielding error by shortstop Jean Segura allowed another run to score.
The Mariners’ pitching was not particularly impressive either. Starter Marco Gonzales allowed four runs (three earned) over six innings, and the bullpen was unable to keep the Mets off the board.
The Mariners will need to find a way to generate more offense if they hope to have success on this road-trip. They will have their work cut out for them as they face the Mets again tonight and then travel to Philadelphia for a three-game series against the Phillies. Hopefully, the Mariners can turn things around and get back on track offensively.
