After two years of waiting in the wings, Kyle McCord is finally getting his chance to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes. The redshirt sophomore was named the starting quarterback for the 2021 season, taking over for C.J. Stroud who graduated after a successful four-year stint as the team’s signal caller.
McCord has been patiently biding his time since arriving in Columbus in 2019. He was a highly-touted recruit out of Philadelphia, and was expected to compete for the starting job right away. But Stroud won the job and McCord was relegated to backup duty.
Now, with Stroud gone, it’s McCord’s time to shine. He’s got all the tools to be successful, with a strong arm and good mobility. He’s also got a great understanding of the offense, having spent two years learning from Stroud and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson.
McCord will have plenty of weapons at his disposal, too. The Buckeyes return a plethora of talent at the skill positions, including running back Trey Sermon and wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson. The offensive line is also experienced and talented, giving McCord plenty of protection as he looks to lead Ohio State to success.
It’s been a long road for McCord, but he’s finally getting his chance to prove himself as the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback. With his combination of talent and experience, he has all the tools to lead Ohio State to great things in 2021.
