The White Sox-Guardians game on Tuesday night was anything but normal. In the bottom of the sixth inning, a fight broke out between White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson and Guardians third baseman José RamÃrez, resulting in a wild brawl that saw six players ejected from the game.
The altercation began when Anderson took exception to a pitch thrown by Guardians starter, Carlos Carrasco. Anderson stepped out of the batter’s box and exchanged words with Carrasco before taking a few steps towards the mound. Ramírez then stepped in between the two and pushed Anderson away, which is when the fight began.
Both benches cleared and a wild melee ensued. Anderson and Ramírez were both ejected, along with four other players. The White Sox ended up winning the game, but the incident left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth.
This is not the first time that Anderson has been involved in an on-field altercation. Last season, he was suspended for four games after he charged the mound and threw punches at Royals pitcher Brad Keller.
The incident between Anderson and Ramírez is yet another example of why Major League Baseball needs to take a stronger stance on on-field altercations. Players should not be allowed to get away with behavior that puts their opponents or themselves in danger.
It is unclear what kind of punishment Anderson and Ramírez will face for their actions. However, it is clear that Major League Baseball needs to take a stand and make sure that players understand that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.
