It is with great sadness that the Washington State University (WSU) community mourns the passing of former Cougar football player Scott Pelluer. He passed away at the age of 64 on June 16, 2020.
Pelluer was a standout linebacker for the WSU football team from 1976 to 1979. He was a two-time All-Pac-10 selection and was named the team’s MVP in 1979. He was also a two-time academic All-American and was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994.
Pelluer’s career at WSU was highlighted by his performance in the 1978 Apple Cup, when he recorded a school record 22 tackles. He was also part of the 1979 team that won the Holiday Bowl, the first bowl game victory in school history.
Following his college career, Pelluer was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round of the 1980 NFL Draft. He played three seasons in the NFL before retiring in 1983.
After his playing career, Pelluer returned to WSU and served as an assistant coach from 1984 to 1988. He then moved on to become the head coach at Central Washington University from 1989 to 1992.
Pelluer will be remembered as one of the greatest players in WSU history. He was a leader both on and off the field and his legacy will live on in Pullman for years to come. The WSU community extends its deepest condolences to Pelluer’s family and friends during this difficult time.
