On a historic night in Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim made history when three of their players hit consecutive home runs in the same inning. On August 8th, 2019, Angels’ outfielders Mike Trout, Hunter Drury, and Matt Thaiss all hit home runs in the same inning against the Colorado Rockies. This feat has only been accomplished twice before in the history of the MLB.
The Angels were already leading the game 8-3 when Trout stepped up to the plate in the top of the sixth inning. He hit a solo home run to left field to extend the Angels’ lead to 9-3. Drury then followed with another solo home run to center field, and Thaiss then hit a three-run homer to left-center field. The Angels went on to score 13 runs in the inning, the most in a single inning in franchise history.
The Angels’ feat was made even more impressive by the fact that all three players are rookies. Trout is a five-time All-Star and two-time MVP, but Drury and Thaiss are both in their first season in the majors. This is only the third time in MLB history that three rookies have hit consecutive home runs in an inning. The other two instances occurred in 1998 and 2002.
The Angels’ 13-run inning was part of a 19-2 victory over the Rockies. It was the Angels’ highest scoring game since they scored 20 runs against the Texas Rangers in 2007. The Angels have now won six consecutive games and are currently in first place in the American League West.
The Angels’ historic performance is a testament to their young talent and their ability to come together as a team. It is a night that will be remembered for years to come and is sure to be talked about for generations.
