On Tuesday, the University of West Virginia announced that Josh Eilert will be the interim head coach for the men’s basketball team following the departure of Bob Huggins. Eilert has been an assistant coach for the Mountaineers since 2017 and has been a part of the program for the past four years.
Huggins had been the head coach of West Virginia since 2007 and was one of the most successful coaches in the program’s history. He led the Mountaineers to nine NCAA tournament appearances, including two Final Fours and one Elite Eight. He also won three Big 12 regular-season titles and two Big 12 tournament titles.
Eilert is no stranger to success either, as he was part of the staff that helped the Mountaineers reach the Sweet 16 in 2019. He also served as an assistant coach at Ohio State University from 2011 to 2017, where he helped lead the Buckeyes to three NCAA tournament appearances.
Eilert is a native of West Virginia and is a graduate of Marshall University. He is well-respected in the college basketball community and is known for his ability to develop players and build relationships with them. He also has a strong understanding of the game and is a great teacher of the fundamentals.
The Mountaineers are hoping that Eilert can continue the success that Huggins had at West Virginia and help the program reach new heights. He will have some big shoes to fill, but with his experience and knowledge of the game, he should be able to do just that.
West Virginia is a proud basketball program with a long history of success, and Eilert will be looking to add to that legacy. It will be interesting to see how he fares in his new role as interim head coach, but one thing is for sure: the Mountaineers are in good hands with Josh Eilert at the helm.
