The Seattle Mariners suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night, as they fell in 11 innings. The game was tied at 3-3 heading into the 11th inning, but the White Sox were able to push across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the frame. The loss was made even more painful by the fact that it was Paul Sewald who blew the save in the 11th inning.
Sewald entered the game in the 10th inning and was able to get two quick outs. However, he then allowed a single to Yoan Moncada and a double to Jose Abreu, which put runners on second and third with two outs. Sewald then walked Tim Anderson to load the bases, and then allowed a walk-off single to Eloy Jimenez to give the White Sox the win.
This was Sewald’s second blown save of the season, and it was a tough one for him to swallow. He had been pitching well for the Mariners this season, posting a 2.45 ERA in 17 appearances. He had also not allowed a run in his last nine appearances prior to Tuesday night’s game.
The loss was a tough one for the Mariners, as they had been playing well recently and had won four of their last five games. They now have a record of 24-34 on the season, and they are currently in fourth place in the AL West.
The Mariners will look to bounce back from this tough loss as they take on the White Sox again on Wednesday night. They will be hoping that Paul Sewald can put this tough outing behind him and continue to be a reliable arm out of the bullpen.
