The Wells Fargo Championship was held this past weekend at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The tournament was won by American golfer, Ryan Clark, who shot a final round of 63 to finish two shots ahead of Xander Schauffele.
Clark began the final round with a three-shot lead over Schauffele and was able to maintain that lead throughout the round. He birdied four of the first five holes and then went on to birdie seven of the final 13 holes to finish with a bogey-free round of 63. This was Clark’s first PGA Tour win and his first win since the 2013 Web.com Tour Championship.
Schauffele, who was playing in his first Wells Fargo Championship, put up a valiant effort but was unable to catch Clark. He shot a final round of 65 and finished in second place. Schauffele had a chance to tie Clark on the 18th hole but his birdie putt just missed the hole.
The rest of the field was unable to keep pace with Clark and Schauffele. Rory McIlroy finished in third place at 11-under par, four shots behind Clark. Justin Rose, who was tied for the lead after the second round, finished in fourth place at 10-under par.
Clark’s win at the Wells Fargo Championship is his first PGA Tour win and it moves him up to No. 12 in the FedEx Cup standings. It also gives him an exemption into the PGA Championship in August.
Overall, it was an exciting tournament with Clark and Schauffele battling it out down the stretch. In the end, Clark was able to hold off Schauffele and secure his first PGA Tour win.
