Mike Shannon, Former St. Louis Cardinals Broadcaster and World Series Champion, Passes Away

It is with great sadness that the sports world mourns the passing of Mike Shannon, the beloved former St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster and World Series champion. Shannon passed away on January 5th, 2020 at the age of 79.

Shannon had a long and storied career in baseball, beginning in 1962 when he was drafted by the Cardinals. He played for the Cardinals for eight seasons, winning two World Series titles in 1964 and 1967. He was also a three-time All-Star and a Gold Glove winner in 1968. After his playing career ended, Shannon joined the Cardinals’ broadcast team in 1972 and remained with the team until his retirement in 2013.

Shannon was beloved by Cardinals fans for his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. He was known for his catchphrase “Get up, baby!” and his signature home run call of “It might be, it could be, it is! A home run!” He was also known for his signature red sport coat and his love of the game.

Shannon was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014. He was also honored with a statue outside Busch Stadium in 2018.

The Cardinals organization released a statement saying, “The Cardinals are deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Shannon, one of the most beloved figures in franchise history. His passion for the game of baseball, his love for the Cardinals organization and his devotion to our fans will be remembered forever.”

Mike Shannon will be remembered as a beloved broadcaster, a World Series champion and a true St. Louis Cardinals legend. His enthusiasm and love for the game will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
