Stephens’ 21 help American defeat Holy Cross 73-68 in OT

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Elijah Stephens had 21 points in American’s 73-68 overtime victory over Holy Cross on Thursday night.

Matt Rogers scored seven points as American opened overtime on a 9-2 surge and led 68-61 with 1:41 left. Geoff Sprouse’s 3-pointer for the Eagles made it 71-64 with 22 seconds remaining.

Sprouse made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force the extra period tied 59-all.

Stephens also contributed five assists and four steals for the Eagles (11-3). Rogers added 15 points while going 7 of 12 from the field, and he also had 11 rebounds. Sprouse recorded 11 points and shot 4 for 11, including 3 for 9 from beyond the arc.

The Crusaders (5-11) were led in scoring by Gerrale Gates, who finished with 25 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Holy Cross also got 12 points and nine rebounds from Joseph Octave. In addition, Will Batchelder had 10 points.
