The Oklahoma Sooners had a dominant performance in their season opener against Arkansas State on Saturday, winning 73-0. Freshman quarterback Dillon Gabriel had a remarkable first half, completing 17 of 22 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown to help the Sooners jump out to a 42-0 lead at the half.
The Sooners defense was also impressive, holding Arkansas State to just 114 total yards and forcing three turnovers. Oklahoma’s defense was led by linebacker Nik Bonitto, who had seven tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble.
The Sooners offense was balanced and efficient, with five different players scoring touchdowns. Running back T.J. Pledger led the way with two rushing touchdowns, while wide receivers Trejan Bridges and Marvin Mims each had a touchdown reception.
The Sooners dominated in all facets of the game, outgaining Arkansas State 581-114 in total yards and holding the Red Wolves to just 1-for-14 on third down conversions. Oklahoma also had an impressive time of possession advantage, holding the ball for over 41 minutes.
The Sooners will look to build on this impressive performance as they prepare for their next game against Kansas State on September 12th. If Dillon Gabriel can continue his strong play and the defense can remain stout, Oklahoma could be in for another big win.
